Blythe dolls with disproportionately large head and huge eyes which may change their color appeared long ago, in 1972. Not existing company, named Kenner released "unconventional" beauties made according to sketches of Margaret Keane. Released and immediately regretted it. People did not appreciate the attractiveness of Blythe, dolls gathered dust on the shelves in the shops and warehouses. Company stopped the production of the doll because of its unpopularity.
Only in 1997 Blythe got a happy ticket. Television and film producer Gina Garan received the "alien" doll as a present. Gina studied photography and decided to use her odd present as a model. She went to the voyage to take photos in different countries and places. Blythe was pictured on the background of the famous attractions and beautiful scenery. Three years later, Garan released an album, which included 100 photographs from trips with the doll and called it «This is Blythe». A beautiful girl on the background of the most beautiful places in the world attracted people’s attention, but there were long two years before the entire world become mad on this doll.
In 2002, the company Hasbro, the successor of Kenner, sold the rights to produce unique dolls to the farsighted Japanese company Takara. It was the masterfully organized Japanese television advertising campaign, after which millions of people fell in love with Blythe. It was the time when the big-eyed doll, at last, gained the recognition. Shops did not have time to order new dolls. They were sold out in several days.
Currently one Blythe doll is issued for a month, except for limited editions. In addition, Prima Dolly and Dolly Encore series are appearing on the market from time to time. This so-called "core" doll in a rather simple but fashionable clothes you may change every minute. "Real" Blythe are still produced in Japan, but the rights on the issue of "classic American line" are owned by Hasbro concern. Hasbro-FACI dolls are dressed much more modestly than their "sisters" and, as some collectors assure, they are of much poorer quality.
Blythe’s uniqueness is not only in its large head. Its main originality is the enormously big eyes which may change color and look around. The creators have put into the doll the special mechanism. If you pull the thread from the ringlet, which is located in the neck hole of the doll, her eyes will be closed. And after opening they will have another color and Blythe will look in different direction. However the girl does not have black eyes, but blue, green, orange and pink are available. Some editions of these exclusive dolls now may have other options. And if you are fond of OOAK, you can choose any color combination imaginable.
The doll is made in two versions - "the elder" and "the little sister" - 28-centimeter "classic" Beauty and the 11.5-cm Petit Blythe ("Baby Blythe).
Blythe’s anatomy has some peculiarities. The legs of the doll can be bent, but hands – no. The waist of skinny girls rotates and her long shiny hair is sewn into the head. And... Blythe does not have eyebrows.
